The Gallagher's
Gallagher Tree and History
Gallagher Family
We start the Gallagher Family with Thomas Gallagher, a shoemaker. This information was gained on his son Peter’s wedding certificate.
Peter was born circa 1842 in Donegal, Ireland; we know this because he was shown as a boarder in Kirkdale on the 1871 Census.
Peter married Ann Connelly daughter of Christopher Connelly (Labourer) on 13 September 1869 at St Alexander’s Chapel, Bootle. Peter’s age was given as 26 which would give him a birth year of circa 1842/3

On the 9 March 1871 Anne died from Variola Confluens or Smallpox, according to her death certificate she was not vaccinated for this. She died at the Workhouse, Mill Road, Everton

On the 1871 Census taken just a month later, I can only trace Peter living with a Walsh family in Kirkdale, I don’t know if there is a connection to our Walsh family. But Thomas is not with him. Peter is described as a Boot Maker at Works aged 28 Widow:

I would say without a doubt this is our Peter Gallagher. He is living where his son was born two years before; he is listed as a shoemaker, a widow and comes from Ireland. I have no doubt this is him. But where is Thomas? I have tried without success to find him, most likely he was being looked after by a family friend or indeed family? But I have no evidence to support this.
We next see Peter and his son Thomas on the 1881 census again as lodgers in Birkdale:

Peter was then admitted a number of times to the Liverpool Workhouse, Brownlow Hill, the last time he was admitted was on 10th January 1884. He was admitted as a medical case, so I believe it was the hospital part of the Workhouse he was admitted to. He finally died on 7th March 1884 from Consumption. Below are his admission details.

As for Thomas he was by then 15 years old. I sent off for his Navy Records which show he first joined on 10 September 1891 for twelve years. He was 5’5” in height, with dark brown hair, grey eyes and a sallow complexion. He also had a scar on his left hand and an anchor on his left fore arm. Although he joined in September, on the 1891 census, which was taken in March, he is described already as being a ships stoker? Had he joined before then or did he work on Merchant Ships?
Thomas’ first ship was the Asia then followed Victory II, Crontes, Victory II again, Beagle for four years, Victory II again, Victory I, the Edinburgh, Rodney. He was discharged a number of times, but his record is not clear exactly what age he was completely discharged from the Navy. He was sent to the cells for a time, not sure what for. And on 25th October 1911 it was written in his notes: No action to be taken with reference to this man having altered the date of birth on his SC Gallagher informed that a repetition of this offence will lead to his prosecution. I think he was trying to stay in longer, the Navy have his date of birth as 24th June 1871, but we have his birth certificate he was born in 1869.
On 29th March 1891 at Holy Trinity Church, St Anne Street, Liverpool Thomas married Florence Jackson. He was described as a Mariner. The witnesses to the marriage were Sarah Ellen Lyness and Thomas Jackson, Florence’s brother. I have found a marriage record for Sarah Lyness marrying a William Jackson, so I will be sending off for her certificate to see who he is.

At some point after this Thomas and Florence moved to number 10 Fletcher Gardens. During the next twenty years they had eight children starting with:
Thomas George Gallagher born 5th June 1892
Albert Gallagher born 1894
John Gallagher born 1898
James Gallagher born 1900
Peter Gallagher born 15th July 1901
William Gallagher born 28 October 1905
James Gallagher born 13th March 1909
Arthur Gallagher born 29th March 1912
This is the family in 1901, note there is a son called James born in 1900, obviously this son died during infancy, but I have not found a death record yet. This was quite common practise, to have a child who dies, then to re-name another child with the same name.

So, Thomas and Florence continued living in Birkett Street right up to their deaths. Thomas died on 15th February 1929 at the Ministry of Pensions Hospital, Park Avenue Liverpool. He died from Chronic Bronchitis and Pneumonia, his son William (Bill) was the informant still living at 62 Birkett Street.

From that time onwards Florence lived with her sons Bill and John (Jack) in Birkett Street.
Starting with their son Thomas born 5th June 1892 he left home very young and joined the Army on 29 May 1913 aged 21, two years later he was in the Royal Fusiliers. He was awarded the 1914 Star during the First World War. He was discharged from the Army on 15 November 1934. Army Number: 6448007.
On 18th October 1933 he married Rose May Casswell. They had two children, Albert and Valerie. Albert married Betty Bates and Valerie married Stanley Griffiths. They each had two children of their own. Thomas died on 14th April 1976.
Albert Gallagher was born in 1894 he married Mary Tudor in 1920 at St Timothy’s Church Liverpool. They had six children, all born in Liverpool, the family then moved to Bromborough. Their third son Robert died during the Second World War (see home page) and is buried in Italy.
John (Jack) was born in 1898; he was a Bachelor and a Labourer. He lived in Birkett Street all his life.
James Gallagher was born in 1900, nobody knew of this little boy before his presence was found on the 1901 census. Obviously he died young, but I have not found a death record for him yet.
Peter Gallagher born 1901 married Elizabeth Walsh, they had six children. Upholstery was a trade of the Jackson family, as well as joinery/carpentry, cabinet making etc. Peter could make anything he set his mind to, and was one of the first people to build his own radio - using numerous bits and pieces including a huge battery - the neighbours used to come in and listen to it.
William Gallagher (Bill) was born on 28th October 1905; he was an Upholsterer and bachelor, also spending his life in Birkett Street
James was born 1909 he married Esther Simpson in 1929 and they went on to have four children.
Arthur was born in 1912 he married Maria Burns in 1934 they had four children. Arthur died from TB when he was only 55 years old.
The Jackson Family The Jackson family come from Youghal, South East Cork, Ireland. I have researched as far as I can reasonably go with this family. It starts off with a Richard Jackson, Boot & Shoemaker we don't know where he came from, Richard had one child that we know of Thomas Jackson, he was born in 1820 County Down, Ireland. We don't know if the whole family then moved to Youghal, South East Cork, but there is a record in the 1835 Poll Books of Youghal for a Richard Jackson shoemaker, living at South Main Street, Youghal no other trace has been found. Parish Records have been checked and there seems to be no trace of any Jacksons at all in Youghal at that time. Thomas Jackson with his first wife Barbara Reeves who he married in 1837 had 3 children born in Youghal, their 4th child was born in Liverpool. Barbara our Great Great Great Grandmother unfortunately died at the age of 28 on 27 October 1847 Liverpool. Thomas and Barbara Reeves record of intention to marry The Church of Ireland Marriage Licence Bonds for Cloyne Diocese (Covering Youghal Parish) list the intent to marry Thomas to Barbara Reeves 1837 - The original record did not survive, and nor is there a transcript available. Thomas re-married a Margaret Bennett, who was Welsh would you believe!! They had two children, Thomas Jnr and George The Jacksons lived in 1 Dukes Terrace also 9 Dukes Terrace, Liverpool, 4 Pomona St, Liverpool, 61 Peach St, Liverpool.
Why did the Jacksons come to England, who knows, but it was the mid 1840s about the time of the Potato famine, so maybe this had something to do with it.
The Worthingtons are our only English line and came from the Centre of Liverpool and Everton area. We start off with Richard Worthington who was a Baker, he married Sarah Leyland. They had nine children and I have been able to find most of their descendants through certificates, census returns. They are a huge family, and some of their occupations are Cabinet Makers, Wood Turners, Hairdressers (Barbers) Painter and Decorators and general labourers.
The families lived pretty close to each other, some of the addresses I have for them are:
