My Walsh family originally from Sligo, Ireland

All of my family stories come from my Great Aunty Theresa Walsh who unfortunately died on 4th February 2008 she was an amazing teller of our family history, and it is thanks to her that we have the stories we have, what an amazing legacy to leave...below is a picture at her Holy Communion in 1930

Aunty Theresa also joined the Wrens when she was 17 to help fight in World War II.  She joined up to train as a nurse, all the family and neighbours rallied round and bought her writing paper, stamps and they had a huge send off for her, when she arrived at her destination, she was so homesick that she lasted 4 days!! She was a volunteer and was told by another volunteer that the only jobs they had were general workers (cleaners most probably) and to say she would only accept nursing..which Theresa did and was promptly allowed to go home, much to the surprise of her family and neighbours!!

John Walsh - My Great Grandfather born 1884 Liverpool

This is a photograph of my Great Aunt Theresa Walsh making her First Holy Communion, this was taken around about 1930.

The Walsh History

Patrick Walsh who was a Hawker had two sons that we know of. We are not aware if the whole of the Walsh family moved to Liverpool, England or just Patricks sons John born c1855 and Thomas c1858.On the 1881 Census John was living with his brother Thomas at 6/2 Lace Street, Liverpool. His occupation was given as labourer in Marine Store (General Shop) John married Ann Godfrey in 1877 at the Parish church of St Peter in Liverpool. Yet on the 1881 she was not with him she was staying with her Father Martin Godfrey.  John was known to have left Ann from time to time because she took to drink. They had two children, John and Elizabeth, John was born on 10 April 1884 3 in 1 Court, Lace Street and Elizabeth was born 27 January 1892.  John left Ann for good after Elizabeth was born, it is known he died not long after this time.  Ann spent the rest of her days living with Elizabeth upto the 1930's.  Elizabeth married John Staunton, they lived in Hollingbourne Road, Norris Green before the war.Ann Godfrey told her family of stories relating to the IRA.... Apparently they would be chased by the English Soldiers, and it was not unknown for the IRA to run into houses where funerals were being held, lift up the person or child who had died, and hide the weapons under the body. Also to enter houses where sick people were and hide weapons under them. They did this because the English were known to respect the dead and ill.

When John was 10 years old his father had died, his mother was in Prison, it is not known what for, (probably drunkeness) John was found to be destitute, he was taken before the court and ordered to be taken into Beaconsfield Road Orphanage in May 1894 and then finally sent to Canada in July 1894. At the same time Elizabeth his sister was known to have been placed into an orphanage, it is not known which one yet.  I have spoken to a lady from the Nugent Care Society who hold the records for John she says it is very very sad, but that they probably had nothing at all.  John used to sell matches in the street, and told his daughter Theresa if he came home with six pennies he thought he was rich, he would give the money to his Mother.

He was placed on a farm and treated well by the childless couple he was placed with. They changed his name to Michael Sage.  When he was 22 years old he got work on a ship and worked his way back to England to see his Mother. This was an amazing feat in those days, Canada is huge, so to not only cross the whole of Canada, then get a ship back to Liverpool was unbelievable.

There is a story in the family that Ann when she found out what happened to John battered the Nun who told her, but is it any wonder he was sent off ? Can you imagine the life him and his sister were living with no parents to look after them? Very Sad story.

When he arrived back in Liverpool he met his wife to be Mary Kennedy, he asked her to come back to Canada with him as he was to inherit the farm, she refused to go with him so he stayed. He then changed his name back to John Walsh.

On the 1881 Census John Snr was living with his brother Thomas at 6/2 Lace Street, Liverpool. His occupation was given as labourer in Marine Store (General Shop)

 Mary Kennedys Story

James Kennedy, Marys father, was a Merchant Seaman, he went missing at sea, and he was presumed drowned.  His wife Helene Gallagher took ill and never recovered the fact he went missing.

Helenes sister Mary and husband Edward Pearson started to look after Helene and her two children, Mary jnr and Julie/Julia.  After Helene died Mary Snr treated the kids badly, so Mary Jnr was then placed in Leyfield Convent, West Derby.  Nobody knows what happened to the younger sister Julia

Mary had awful memories of the convent and hated her time there.  She had an accident; one of the Nuns woke her up and asked her to run across the field to get the farmer, as there was a fire in the basement.  As she ran down the stairs she tripped and she landed with a nail either in her eye or above, she lost her eye.

Mary was to later meet her cousin Edward Pearson Jnr and she then proceeded to tell him how badly his mother Mary Gallagher had treated her.  She met a cousin Ted Makin whose Grandmother was James Kennedys sister, Mary asked if they had heard anything from the Shipping Company regarding the disappearance of her Father.  He replied he had heard nothing.

How Mary and John Walsh met

Mary told her daughter Theresa that she was visiting a relative, and this lovely handsome man arrived, with an American accent.  But it was in fact Canadian; John Walsh was that man...

She told her children she was either 17 or 18 when she had Grandma (Elizabeth Walsh) there was a lot of trouble in the family they believed that Mary and John were related to each other, but this was not the case.

They wrote to the church and received a letter from the Pope, who stated that they were not related by blood but they both shared an uncle one by marriage and one by blood, his name was Michael Gallagher.

He was the husband of Mary Godfrey, sister to Ann Godfrey (Johns Mother) so in fact Michael was Johns Uncle by Marriage. And he would be the Uncle by blood to Mary Kennedy as her mother, Helene Gallagher was Michaels sister.

At the time of marriage, both John and Mary gave the address of 3 in 4 Court Springfield Street, Liverpool.  Witnesses were Mary MacCatherall and Martin Corcoran.

Gallagher Family Tree

We start off the Maternal Gallagher line with Luke and Mary Gallagher they were both born in Ireland, I do not know what part of Ireland.  I have not found a marriage for them I have searched the marriage index from 1850-1855, as their first son was born c1853-1855 I am assuming they were married in Ireland and then came over to England. Luke was a Bricklayers labourer they lived for a while in Lace Street, which is where John Walsh and Ann Godfrey lived as well.  Luke died from Bronchitis, I cant find any trace of the Gallaghers in later Census returns, and I am assuming Mary also died sometime after the 1881 census was taken, unless she re-married before the 1891 census.

And lastly Helene Gallagher who is supposed to have married James Kennedy, I can find no trace of Helene in any census returns with her family, nor can I find a marriage to James Kennedy either, nor is she on any later census returns, we know that James Kennedy was presumed drowned prior to 1901

                  1.6.2Julia Kennedy b unknown

Nothing is known of Julia Kennedy at all, it is not known if she was adopted, or if she was placed in an orphanage.

It is my belief that Ellen Gallagher is possibly Helene, Mary Kennedy Helenes daughter called her own daughter Helene after her mother, but I can't find Helene anywhere....given the Irish accent, Ellen could be spoken as Helene, but Helene is a very different name in Ireland to Ellen...I can only keep searching for a birth certificate for Mary or in fact a marriage for Helene/Ellen Gallagher to prove my theory.

Godfrey Family Tree

The first we know of the Godfrey’s is Martin Godfrey from Ireland, he was described on his daughter Ann’s marriage certificate as a Hawker (seller) I found a record of him in 19 Court, Lace Street Liverpool on the 1851 census with his wife Bridget Godfrey, also at the same address were Martin's sister Elizabeth Collins (married to Michael Collins) and Michael Godfrey who later married another Bridget Regan - maybe a relative of Bridget's?

I found Bridget and Martins Marriage on 6th October 1845 at St Nicholas Church, Liverpool. I sent off for the certificate to see who their Fathers are, Martin's Father is called Mark Godfrey and Bridget's Father is Owen Regan.

The next we see of Martin is on the 1881 census with his daughter Ann Welsh/Walsh, but I believe the age for Martin is incorrect, he is shown as 80, but more likely to be 60, Martin's age keeps on changing with each census, but I sent for his Death Certificate and he was noted as being 60 years of age in 1881 which gives him a year of birth of C1821.  Ann Walsh nee Godfrey was not with her husband John Walsh on the 1881 census, although they had been married for four years, so this again supports the fact it is likely to be Ann and her Father Martin but he is described as a Widow, so Bridget had died by this time. I will keep searching for a death for Bridget

After this time I can’t find a trace of Martin or Ann Godfrey but I did find a death of a Martin Godfrey aged 60 who died from a fractured pelvis, he died on the 11th June 1881 there was an inquest into his death, but I am unable to find the report as these records are destroyed.

This is the record for Ann Godfrey in the 1871 Census, a prisoner in a prison in Knaphill, Surrey, so it looks likely that she was a drinker even at this young age. I will try and trace the prison and see if their records still exist.
